CSI, Catholic and Pentecostal: Marriage Differences
3 October 2026
Tamil Christians belong to many churches, and marriage customs and preparation differ between them. This overview is general; always ask your own pastor or priest about the exact requirements of your church.
Why denomination matters in a match
Denomination affects how a family worships, what happens at the wedding, and how children are raised in the faith. Many families prefer a partner from the same church, while others are comfortable with a partner from a similar tradition.
Catholic marriages
Catholic couples usually prepare through their parish, and the wedding takes place in the church according to its rules. When one partner is not Catholic, the parish priest can explain what is needed. Speak to your priest early.
CSI and other historic Protestant churches
Couples normally meet the pastor, attend pre-marriage counselling and have the wedding in the church or a place the pastor agrees to. Each congregation has its own practices, so ask your pastor.
Pentecostal, AG and independent churches
Pentecostal and independent churches usually emphasise personal faith and often have their own pastor-led preparation. Practices vary from church to church.
Marrying across denominations
Many Tamil Christian couples come from different churches. The best approach is to talk openly about worship, the wedding, and how you will raise children, and to involve both pastors. A shared faith in Christ matters most.
